Kanye West’s ye is currently the number one album on Billboard 200. After receiving so much love and attention, it’s intriguing to figure out why this album has been blowing up. This could be due to the fact that it’s just Kanye being Kanye, but something about this album is uplifting and it should not be ignored.

Kanye begins this album with “I Thought About Killing You”. Here, he opens up about traumatizing personal thoughts he’s had; struggling to love himself, contemplating suicide, and even thinking about murdering his loved ones. As disturbing as these lyrics may seem, especially in an album opener, Kanye stays true to himself and shows he isn’t afraid to speak his mind…as if we didn’t know that about him already. “The most beautiful thoughts are behind the darkest,” Kanye sings. It is these lyrics that expose the underlying message of ye.

This message is cleverly portrayed in the second track of the album, “Yikes”. Here, Kanye speaks about how he has frightened himself and mentions his past opioid addiction. As he continues to creatively open up about his dark struggles, the turning point on ye comes at the end of the track. West starts yelling things in the third person like “That’s why I fuck With Ye!” and “That’s my bipolar shit…that’s my superpower…I’m a superhero!” Here, West lets us all know that he is flipping his personal issues to his advantage or how he stated it, his “superpower.”

“That’s my bipolar shit…that’s my superpower…I’m a superhero!”

This is where the album starts to become a therapeutic, yet thrilling adventure for his fans and listeners. On one hand, Ye is a beautiful mess of free expression, but it seems to be his goal to “feel free.” Kanye had an obvious goal here and it is quite evident that he achieved it as ye; his eighth album in a row to hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart.

Ye is a journey of discovering peace and tranquility. His last two tracks, “Ghost Town”, one of the most played songs on the album, and “Violent Crimes”, we get a pair of beautiful anthems that blend and flow calmly with the rest of the album. “Ghost Town” makes you want to scream “I feel kinda freeee!” at the top of your lungs. The beautiful vocals on “Violent Crimes” flows into your ears like water, it is hard to top a closer like that.

Ye is a powerful album that has the capacity to deeply influence it’s listeners; making you feel reminiscent, peaceful, and free. Kanye West demonstrates the beauty and darkness of free expression on this album. And he did it exceptionally well.

This album is an easy 9/10. Check out the full album below.
